SEO Explained In Simple Terms
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is a set of strategies to help improve search engine rankings. That is one of the official definitions of it. SEO is vast and there are many aspects to it. So what is SEO and how does it work? Different people will give you different definitions and explains. Here’s my version of it. Hopefully, this article will help you understand SEO better.
Firstly, you need to understand that SEO is a marketing tool. It’s a tool that is used to get better ranking on search engines. A search engine is a website that helps you look for stuff on the internet. When you are looking for information on a particular item you type out the ‘keyword’ you are looking for and the site gives you a series of web -pages that match what you are looking for. A keyword is the phrase that you type in the search bar. The keyword could be anything from information on movie timings to information on health issues. But have you ever thought about who decides what order the results are in? How does it decide which sites appear on the first page?
The answer is Page Rank. Page Rank is a system that assigns ranks to websites and then displays those sites in that order when they are requested by a user. The Page Rank or PR system has a number of criteria that help it rank sites. Some of them are domain age, page layout, description, headers, backlinks etc. These are the important criteria of the ranking system and the ones that SEO mostly concentrates on. Keep this in mind and I will come back to this later.
Now, my you search for something on the internet and use a search engine to do so, you will notice that the search engine will give you millions of results. Do you actually visit each site that the search engine displays? Odds are that you will find what you are looking for on the first page of the results. So what of all the other sites that has what you are looking for? Both you and the site have lost an opportunity. Neither the ranking system nor the search site is to blame. It is just that the number of sites on the internet is so large that someone is bound to lose. SEO helps improve a site’s ranking so that it may appear on the first few pages of a search engine when an appropriate keyword is searched for.
SEO works to improve Page Rank of a site by changing the site (if need be) as well as creating more links to it. The links leading to a site act as a reference to a site. The higher the links to a site, the better its ranking gets. The quality of the links also matters as links to sites that have high Page Ranks get give better results. The layout of the site (on the source or script) also helps give better results.
