The Basics of Search Engines and Search Engine Optimisation
A search engine is basically a computer program that is used to search documents on the basis of specified keywords and then produces a list of all the documents that matched for the keywords. Though search is a general term used for a particular class of programs that perform this function, it is often used specifically for search engines like Google, Yahoo, etc.
So how do search engines work? A search engine lets out a spider to the web and this fetches all the documents match the search keyword and an indexer, yet another computer program then reads all these documents creating an index of the documents on the basis of the number of times the keywords have been used in the document. A proprietary algorithm is used by each search service provider in order to create indices in such a way that a user gets meaningful results while searching for information regarding a particular keyword.
So what is SEO? SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is a strategy that is used by a number of online service providers to make their website search engine friendly so that these rank higher on the indexes and have a greater chance of being visited by the user. SEO has two categories:
1. On-page optimisation: This involves using strategies used to change the web-page source codes and making content keyword-rich.
2. Off-page optimisation: This involves techniques aimed at getting links to the website.
There are two basic steps that are involved in making a web-page appear on the search results page:
1. Getting the web-page in the search index: This step is relatively easy to accomplish. All that has to be done here is to make sure that the spiders know that your web-page exists and point out how to find it. This is generally done by using an already indexed page to point out a new web-page.
2. Getting the web-page ranked high on the final indexed-results: This is harder to accomplish and most of the tasks in SEO revolve around this.
